Shih Tzus - Puppies - History of the Breed

Shih Tzus originated in Tibet. They were bred by Buddhist monks in the Temples. Shih Tzus were called by Dalai Lamas as "Holy Dogs." Some of the Temple dogs were sent to Manchu Emperors in the Palaces of Peking. The Chinese called these dogs "Lion Dogs." In the 1900s, the Empress Tzu Hoi of Northern China received several dogs from the Dalai Lamas. She is known to have taken a keen interest in breeding of these dogs and maintaining the Shih Tzu breed characteristics. Shih Tzu dogs were considered very special and a white splash on the forehead was regarded as a marking of Buddha.

The Shih Tzu became known in England and France in the 1950s. The AKC accepted the Shih Tzu as one of the 15 breeds that could be shown in a miscellaneous class. At present, Shih Tzus belong to the toy group of dogs and rank high among the most popular dog breeds.

Shih Tzus - Puppies - Disposition

Shih Tzus are lively, affectionate, docile and alert. They can be called all around dogs. When you want to be left alone, the Shih Tzu will sleep peacefully on the sofa. However, when you feel like playing, it is good news for your dog. It is playful and clownish. If you are very busy during daytime and have to leave your Shih Tzu unsupervised, leave the dog some toys to give it the chance to amuse itself. Shih Tzus love being paid much attention.
